Questions and Answers about the Genesis GV80 vs BMW X5

When you are ready for a new luxury SUV, you don’t want to spend your time thinking. You want to jump behind the wheel. However, it is worth a minute just to get your bearings.

The luxury world is different from even a few years ago. One reason is the evolution of Genesis from outlier to major player in just a few years. This comparison should help answer why the GV80 is seen as usurping the German luxury automakers, particularly BMW X5 models.

front
  1. What is Luxury in 2023?

Luxury in 2023 is more than a name. It requires the whole package to represent the highest quality automotive experience. This means pleasing the driver, taking care of every passenger, and creating a style of such classic good looks and high quality materials that it won’t lose its shine.

The Genesis GV80 has no problem getting critics to notice. Kelley Blue Book declares the interior to be “sumptuous”. US News and World Report writes about the GV80’s “jaw-dropping cabin”. Motor Trend notes that this “ultra luxurious interior” has a “spacious layout” and “stunning materials”.

As for the BMW X5, critics note the cabins aren’t very richly furnished in the lower trim levels. As you climb the ladder, you find more and more amenities, but it comes with a bigger pricetag than you’d find on a similar Genesis GV80.

These two brands represent a different approach to luxury. One holds back while the other piles it on from the first package forward. It would seem that the Genesis approach would be more exciting and rewarding to any luxury buyer.

  2. Is All Wheel Drive Standard on the Genesis GV80 or BMW X5?

The 2023 GV80 lineup promises standard all-wheel drive, regardless of price. It’s always nice to have the higher ground clearance and better all-weather traction that comes from electronic all-wheel drive.

On the other hand, the BMW X5 offers all-wheel drive for a higher price than the standard rear-wheel drive models. This means an even bigger price difference between the two luxury brands.

  3. Is it Fun to Drive?

To be more fun to drive, a luxury car must have serious capability even at the entry level. Genesis manages to split the difference between smart fuel efficiency and fun drivability by using turbos. The turbo four kicks out 300 horsepower while the turbo V6 kicks that up to 375 horsepower. Torque rates are 311 lb-ft or 391 lb-ft.

The 2022 Motor Trend SUV of the Year had these engines. That’s the GV80 sibling, the Genesis GV70. And you can bet they have to be fun to drive if they are going to earn an SUV any award from Motor Trend.

BMW models are hyper focused on performance. They generate 335 horsepower at entry level and go up to 380 horsepower. At the top price, a driver could get a 500-plus horsepower engine.

  1. How Big is the GV80 vs BMW X5?

There isn’t a huge difference in size, but it is notable that the GV80 has more second row legroom. That’s 1.3 inches of extra wiggle room, and it can mean the difference between comfort and discomfort for adults in the rear seats.

As for cargo space, the GV80 edges ahead slightly of the X5. With about an extra cubic foot, the Genesis cargo hold isn’t much bigger. What makes it superior is the wide entry and well distributed spaciousness.

When the seats are folded, the X5 area measures some 9 cubic feet less than the GV80. This is a bit more significant for those who may be moving a piece of antique furniture from the store or packing up for a couple’s camping weekend.

  2. What is the 2023 GV80 vs BMW X5 Price?

The GV80 price starts out about $4,000 less than the BMW X5 price. The MSRPs are around $55,550 or $59,400, depending on brand choice. With packages or higher trims, the GV80 price cuts off around $75,000 MSRP while the BMW X5 price climbs to $105,900 MSRP.

Of course, the question goes back to the original one. What is luxury? Do you get enough for your luxury dollar? In the case of the GV80, we see that it has a reputation for excellence. This is clear from its number one rating at Kelley Blue Book. That is further enhanced by the Best Buy Award in its class.

Other critics praise the GV80 for its ability to award the buyer. For instance, Motor Trend calls it “great features per dollar”. This inclination doesn’t change as buyers go up the trim ladder. Even at a price that is about $40,000 less than the top BMW X5, the top Genesis GV80 is a winner. The buyer can be sure that they are getting top luxuries, top technologies, and a future-leaning modern look that will stand the test of time.

  3. What is the Cost to Own the BMW X5 or GV80?

Obviously the cost to own starts with what you pay for the vehicle, and that is clearly in the GV70’s favor. The fuel efficiency is the second area, and here Genesis is ahead again.

The base engines have similar fuel economy, but if you step up to the more powerful choice, the Genesis GV70 still has good gas mileage. The turbo V6 earns 18/23 city/highway mpg, respectable for today’s luxury SUV. However, the BMW X5 V8 earns only 13/18 mpg. That’s going to mean a lot more stops at the gas station.

    table2

Another aspect of cost to own is the warranty. BMW has a four-year warranty that encompasses the limited warranty and the powertrain warranty. This is a typical luxury warranty. However, the Genesis GV70 has a limited warranty that runs for up to five years and a powertrain that runs for up to ten years.

Adding another layer of value to the GV80 package, maintenance is complimentary for up to three years. That’s 36,000 miles of coverage for up to 36 months.

How reliable is the luxury car? JD Power rates the GV80 at 82 (Good) while rating the X5 at 77 (average) out of 100.
