San Tan Valley Grows Up

The area did not have an official name until a vote was taken in 2009. The name of San Tan Valley was applied to the region between Queen Creek to the north and Florence to the south. This makes it one of the newest communities in the state. However, it is now the largest in Pinal County.
As the communities were planned and built, it beckoned people from all over Arizona and the U.S. to the region. Large neighborhoods include Cooper Basin and Castlegate. Over 4,500 people live in Pecan Creek South. Some 20,000 live in Johnson Ranch. Other communities include White Wing, San Tan Heights, and Laredo Ranch. The area has grown by more than 14,000 since 2010, and there’s always a neighborhood under construction in the area.
Since it closely borders Maricopa County, the Valley has become an extension of the Phoenix AZ metropolitan area. The affiliation is still a loose one, and the area’s unincorporated status seems to allow the different communities within it to maintain their own identities.

State Route 89A can take you from Prescott to Flagstaff. Along the way, you enjoy views of the Verde Valley, the Black Hills, and the towering sandstone formations of Sedona. In Oak Creek Canyon, you’ll be navigating hairpin curves, but the views are spectacular. Along this road, you’ll find numerous parks and historical sites.
You may want to take Route 85, the Organ Pipe Cactus Parkway. You’ll get views of the unique National Monument. Route 82 and 83 are equally beautiful. Known as the Patagonia-Sonoita road, you can head for Patagonia Lake State Park, visit historical sites or follow the Arizona Wine Trail.
